INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – Bright blue skies and warm breezes greeted thousands of festivalgoers to the Indian River County Fairgrounds in search of fun and food at the annual Firefighters’ Fair Saturday.
Saturday was supposed to be the second day of the nearly two-week event but torrential rains on Friday forced organizers to close it down before it had a chance to start.
“I’m looking forward to the fried dough,” said Debbie Little, of Vero Beach, who was enjoying some quality time with her granddaughter, Savannah. They started their day off under the food tent enjoying an icy treat.
Kenyetta Brunson brought her 4-year-old daughter, Cordaja Lockett, to the fair for some fresh air and rides.
“We’re having a good time,” Brunson said as Cordaja nodded her head shyly from behind her mother’s leg.
“I come her for the food,” Brunson said, while Cordaja has been having fun on a few of the rides and playing a couple games.
The Indian River County Firefighters’ Fair runs from now through March 21 and offers a host of entertainment, including the Firefighter Training Show, Marcus Magic Illusion & Comedy Show, the Jon Simon Comedy Hypnosis Show, Pickles the Clown and many others.
A new show planned for this year is the IGX Interactive Game Experience. Located inside the main exhibit hall will be a multi-platform, multi-screen video game environment, which incorporates Nintendo Wii, Microsoft XBOX 360 and Sony PS3 into an attractive and fun set up.
Game enthusiasts are encouraged to compete in a Guitar Hero tournament. Seniors are invited to participate in a Wii bowling tournament.
As always, the Indian River County Youth 4-H Clubs and their projects will be on display in the Livestock Pavilion where 4-H’ers will be showing off their prized rabbits, chickens, goats, pigs and cows.
The Exhibit Hall will again be open and will highlight local businesses and organizations.
The Firefighters’ Fair is a nonprofit organization. All proceeds from the fair benefit the Indian River County Burn Fund, local scholarships, fairground improvements and other charitable organizations.

Admission remains $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and children 6 to 12. Children 5 and under are free. Parking is free.
