VERO BEACH — At 7 pm on Saturday, March 27, world-renowned cellist, Mike Block, will be performing at the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center. Mr. Block is donating 100% of the proceeds of his concert to the Vero Beach Orchestra. The funds directly support the public school orchestra programs by providing funds to buy instruments, sheet music, and supplies not covered by public school funding, and contributing to the expense of special events such as student field trips to attend professional concert performances and educational clinics.
Mike Block plays in many groups, including his own band for which he sings and writes. He also performs regularly with fiddler Mark O’Connor as the cellist in his Appalachia Waltz Trio and with Yo Yo Ma in his Silk Road Ensemble. Mike is a member of other ensembles incorporating a wide range of musical genres, including jazz, folk, classical, and pop, and has performed to wide international acclaim.
Performing in Germany, he played the World Premiere and recorded Gregor Hubner’s Cello Concerto No. 1, showcasing his non-traditional pizzicato and improvisational abilities. Mike has performed on NPR’s St. Paul Sunday Morning, and on TV’s VH1, Regis and Kelly, Late Night with Conan O’Brian and with Yo Yo Ma and Allison Krauss on the CBS Early Show.
Mike is a graduate of the Julliard School and the Cleveland Institute of Music and has been a featured Guest Teacher at the Universities of Stanford, Princeton, Sam Houston State, Illinois State, and Illinois Weslyan. In the summers, he regularly teaches and performs at festivals, including Mark O’Connor’s string camps in New York City and Los Angeles, the Kansas City Cello Clinic, and at the Swannanoa Gathering in North Carolina.
General admission tickets for this unique performance are $10.
