John Thomas McGrath, 72, Vero Beach

John Thomas McGrath, 72, died Jan. 24, 2010, at the Indian River Medical Center.

He was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., and lived in Vero Beach for 11 years, coming from his birthplace.

He served in the Navy during the 1950s. Before retirement, he was a linotype operator for Clinton Press in Plattsburgh and a night security guard at Village Green.

Survivors include his sisters, Mary Ann Trombley of Plattsburgh, Kathleen Ford of North Port and Yarmouth, Maine, and Patricia Hanley of Port Orange and Indian Lake, N.Y.

Memorial contributions may be made to VNA/Hospice Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960.

Services will be at a later date in New York.

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. ‘Tragic, sudden loss,’ – Memorials emerge for teen killed in ATV crash

With the sudden death of Sebastian River High School student Jake Beecher still fresh, family, friends, teammates and coaches continue to come to terms with the tragic crash that took his life. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
