FELLSMERE — Fellsmere city leaders, including the Fellsmere Police Department, will be handing out and installing free bicycle lights at the Little League field near City Hall tonight from 5 to 7 p.m.
The city received a case containing about 46 lights from the Florida Department of Transportation, according to Police Chief Scott Melanson. Those wishing to receive a light must bring their bicycles to the field to have officials install them. Preference will be given to juveniles with bikes.
Chief Melanson said that he expects to run out of the lights before giving one away to everyone who shows up. In that case, he said, they would be issuing vouchers for the lights.
Fellsmere has a large cycling population, according to the police chief. However, the dim streetlights at night make it difficult for bicyclers and drivers alike to see, he said.
The bike lights would help with visibility.
