VERO BEACH — Two Vero Beach residents are sitting in jail on nearly $100,000 combined bond after police say they broke into a home, stole and then pawned several pieces of jewelry and a laptop.
Parker Harris, 22, and Sonya Schmalried, 20, were arrested Thursday on charges of burglary, grand theft, dealing in stolen property and giving false information to a pawn dealer, according to the Vero Beach Police Department.
On Thursday, the pair was seen in the driveway of a home in the 1900 block of 30th Avenue. Schmalried asked a neighbor who spotted them if a woman named “Amber” were home. When the neighbor said that there is no Amber living there, the couple left on a motorcycle.
Twenty minutes later, the same neighbor saw the woman run out the front door of the same home and the guy, Harris, standing in the front yard.
The pair took off again on the motorcycle and left the area, the police department said.
The owner of the home the couple had been at was later notified and discovered numerous pieces of gold and silver jewelry, watches and a laptop computer were missing.
A Vero Beach police detective took the homeowner to Community gold and Jewelry Buyers located in the Indian River Mall in connection to the case. The homeowner identified her missing jewelry, police said.
During the course of the investigation, police identified Harris and Schamlried as the ones who broke into the home, stole the property and then pawned it.
Both subjects acknowledged their involvement in the burglary, according to the police department.
