Five local students win Democratic Women’s Club Scholarships

VERO BEACH -- The Democratic Women's Club of Indian River County recently announced the winners of its Annual College and Vocational Training Scholarship awards at its membership luncheon. The Scholarship Committee which consists of Susan Sniffen, Juanita Baker, Josephine Gallo, Elsie Visel and Valerie George, makes its annual awards based on academic standing as well as extracurricular activities, career goals and a commitment to democratic ideals. Man killed during early morning confrontation in Wabasso

WABASSO - A man in his early 20s was shot and killed overnight Sunday in the Summerplace neighborhood of Wabasso. Indian River County Sheriff's Office spokesman Deputy Jeff Luther said that about 2:45 a.m. Sunday man in his early 20s approached a house on the 9400 block of Periwinkle Drive, in the Summerplace subdivision of Wabasso Beach. "The resident got into a confrontation with the white male," Luther said. "A gun was involved. That is all we know at this time, as the case is still under investigation."
