VERO BEACH — Vero Beach police received a call at about 7 a.m. Sunday of a submerged vehicle with a Pennsylvania license plate in the murky waters of the canal behind Royal Palm Pointe.
The vehicle was discovered by landscape workers mowing grass behind What-A-Tavern at 58 Royal Palm Pointe on the north side of the pointe. Vero Beach police responded along with Indian River County Fire and Rescue marine units and the county Sheriff’s office. Divers investigated the vehicle and at about 8:30 a.m. were able to determine that there were no occupants still inside. Personnel from City Cab Towing of Vero Beach hauled the car up over the seawall and a wrecker removed it from the scene shortly after 9:30 a.m.
The alleged driver of the black 2003 Nissan 350-Z sports car was self-identified as Brandon Moyer. Moyer arrived on the scene at about 9 a.m. with an unidentified female relative, who was contacted through information found by running the license plate. Moyer and the relative were questioned by Vero Beach Police on the scene. It is unclear whether or not there was a second occupant who also escaped from the vehicle.Officer John Morrison of the Vero Beach Police department said investigators “do not believe that anyone else is in the water,” but that there are “some conflicting stories about what happened” and who actually was driving the car.
Law enforcement officials are still attempting to contact other possible eyewitnesses who were present at the bar or in the parking lot when the incident occured and to determine what charges, if any will be filed.
We will supply more details as they become available.
