Sunday crash leaves woman with broken leg; man arrested

GIFFORD — A 66-year-old Melbourne man who authorities said struck a woman with his vehicle and did not immediately stop to render aid, was arrested Sunday.

The vehicle driver – identified as William Andrew Cobb – told deputies he looked down at his radio, looked back up, saw the woman and tried to swerve, authorities said. The woman – identified as Ashley Latoya Winn, 26, suffered a broken leg from the crash, reports show.

After the crash, Cobb said “he didn’t know what to do so he kept driving and then turned back around,” reports show.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers arrested Cobb on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident with an injury. Troopers also gave Cobb a citation for the offense.

Cobb was released Monday from the Indian River County Jail on $10,000 bond.

Highway troopers, Indian River County sheriff’s deputies and fire rescue crews responded to the crash involving a silver GMC Acadia and pedestrian about 5 p.m. Sunday at U.S. 1 and 41st Street. Fire rescue crews treated the woman who was found lying on the ground and screaming in pain, reports show.

Another motorist who saw the crash followed the GMC to Aviation Boulevard before the GMC turned around. Deputies had to wave the vehicle down for it to return to the crash site, reports show.

Deputies identified the GMC driver as Cobb. The woman who was struck was taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, reports show.

Cobb was arrested and taken to the county jail. Cobb has an arraignment at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 31, court records show.
