Jean Welborn Acker, 95, Vero Beach
Jean Welborn Acker, 95, of Vero Beach, died on Sept. 20, 2018, in Mills River, N.C. Jean was born in Surry County, N.C., on May 26, 1923.
She moved to Vero Beach as a young woman on a temporary assignment with Western Union. While there, she met and married James Acker, who was postmaster for many years. They lived in Vero Beach for over 60 years, and she was active as a leader in the schools that her children attended, her sorority, the Flower Club, First Baptist Church, and serving as a flower show judge throughout Florida.
Jean was loving, passionate and strong-willed, and she was a natural leader.
Jean is preceded in death by her husband, James; her son, James Jr.; and her granddaughter, Angela.
She is survived by her children, David, Mark and Melissa; grandsons, John Acker and Christian Acker; and granddaughter, Angela; and by beloved dog, Daisy.
A Service of Celebration for her life will be held at First Baptist Church in Vero Beach.
Richard Carlton, 83, Vero Beach
Richard “Rick” Carlton, 83, of Vero Beach, passed away on Sept. 17, 2018. Rick was born in Fort Pierce to parents, Sidney W. Carlton and Eula Bryan Carlton.
He had attended Virginia Military Institute and Florida Southern College.
Rick was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having served in Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 232 (VMFA-232). Rick’s military career led him to Pensacola, Hawaii, Japan, Thailand, and finally to Kingsville, Texas. When Rick separated from the Marine Corp, he was a Captain. Throughout the years he never lost his interest in military planes and pilots.
In 1964, he joined United Airlines, based at O’Hare International Airport, Chicago.
Rick and his wife, Jill, moved to Vero Beach in 1998, coming from Chicago.
He is a member of the “Old Tailhookers” Club in Vero Beach. Rick was a former volunteer at Indian River Shores Department of Public Safety. He and his wife are lifelong members of the American Trapshooting Association, traveling around the country shooting for 20 years.
Rick is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jill Carlton; son, Brad Carlton; daughter-in-law, Anne Carlton; sister, Joanne Humphries; and numerous nieces. His great nieces, Madison and Emma, were the light of his life.
Rick was predeceased by his parents; his son, Jeff Carlton; and brother, Walter Carlton.

Clifford Quincy Hearl, 81, Vero Beach
Clifford Quincy Hearl, 81, of Vero Beach, is rejoicing in heaven on the streets of gold. On Sept. 18, 2018, he gained his wings. Quincy was born Nov. 28, 1936, in Hemp Hill, W.V., to his loving parents, Fred Hearl and Margie Hearl, whom he shared with two siblings, Gayle Hearl and Douglas Hearl.
Quincy is now reunited with his wife, Betty Hearl, of 63 years of marriage in the presence of the Lord.
He was a well-respected man in both the community and by his friends and family. A man of great stories and knowledge, he loved to garden and grow his tomatoes, and had people come from all over the state of Florida to see his set up.
He also was a diehard Yankee fan, and would never miss a game. Quincy had a true appreciation for the outdoors, he loved to get up early and head to the inlet to fish with is grandsons, then come home and take a nap on the back porch.
He was a simple man and was a hard worker and above all absolutely devoted to his wife and family.
Quincy has three children, Fred, (Joeanne), Cheryl ( Keith), and Kenny (Kathy); seven grandchildren, Kristen, (Phil) Katie, Keith, Justin, Joshua, Jacob, and Casey; and three great-grandchildren, Brayden, Braxton, and Laelyn, who would light up Quincy’s eyes and make any day brighter.
Each and every grandchild has an imprint on their hearts that was left by their Poppy. The world lost a great man. Please join us Saturday, Sept. 29, at 11 a.m. for a celebration of Quincy’s life, at the Sebastian Church of God, 281 Delaware Ave., Sebastian.

Ernest Zima, 77, Vero Beach
Ernest “Ernie” Zima, born on Dec. 11, 1940, died on Sept. 18, 2018, in Vero Beach.
He loved good food, road trips, spending time with his many children and grandchildren, and friends. His gentle nature was loved by all.
Ernie’s family owned a dairy farm in White House Station, N.J. He attended the NY Military Academy for high school, Siena College, and was a Captain in the U.S. Army.
He worked in financial services in New York City for over 35 years, including many years in the World Trade Center. But it is in Vero Beach, where he retired, that he found his true home.
Ernie is survived by his six children, Eric (Carol Ann), Jenny (Jim), Gretchen (Daniel), Allison (Tom), Bill (Amy) and Brian (Suly); and his 15 grandchildren; his partner, Martha “Mot” Campel; and his former wife, Melody Zima.
A wake will be held at the Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home in Ramsey, N.J., from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27.
His funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, at the Church of the Presentation, 271 West Saddle River Road, Upper Saddle River, N.J.
A chapel service was held at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the CLH Foundation, started by his daughter Gretchen to help the impoverished of Africa.
