Margaret Elizabeth Haverstick, 94, Vero Beach
Margaret Elizabeth Haverstick, 94, of Vero Beach, passed away peacefully in her sleep of natural causes on Monday, July 30, 2018.
Mrs. Haverstick was born in Newark, N.J., on Dec. 9, 1923, the second youngest of five children of Jacob Fischer and the former Julia Patterson, all of whom predeceased her.
She graduated from West Side High School in Newark in 1942.
In 1943, she married Henry W. Haverstick on the eve of his departure for service in Europe with the U.S. Army during World War II. Following the war, they had a son and daughter and remained devotedly married for nearly 74 years.
In 1953, Mrs. Haverstick and her husband moved to River Edge, N.J., where they raised their children, and resided for 28 years. She and her husband then lived in Manchester, N.J., from 1981 to 1999 and in Germantown, Md., from 1999 to 2012. Later in 2012, they relocated to Vero Beach.
Throughout much of her adult life, Mrs. Haverstick worked tirelessly to help provide a better life for her family, employed with the Beneficial Company in Newark; Hackensack Trust Company, Peoples Trust Company and March of Dimes in Hackensack, New Jersey; Kislak Company in River Edge, as well as with her husband in their Esquire Tailoring and Dry Cleaning business in Teaneck, N.J. She retired in 1981.
Mrs. Haverstick’s husband died in 2017.
She is survived by her son, Henry; daughter, Margaret Buxton; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Margaret was a beautiful lady. The love and affection, the enthusiasm and caring, and the gentle kindness that radiated from her were constant blessings to her family and to all others who knew and cherished her. Her husband loved her completely. To her children, she was the most wonderful mother. Her grandchildren adored her.
She will be ever so dearly missed and will remain in our hearts forever.
Tina Santella, 87, Vero Beach
Tina Santella, 87, died peacefully at VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach, on Aug. 3, 2018, from Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
Tina was born and raised in Augusta, Maine, the only child of George and Genie Calzolari.
She attended Simmons College in Boston, where she met her husband of 63 years, Andrew J. Santella (deceased 2016). They soon settled in Andy’s hometown, Norwalk, Ct. In 1963, Tina and Andy adopted their only child, Christopher Lee, who would be the apple of her eye forever after.
After completing a Master’s in Education, she began teaching Business Education at Staples High School in Westport, Ct.; later she assumed responsibilities as Department Head for Business Ed at Darien High School.
Tina and Andy retired in 1990, and for 15 years, split their time between East Boothbay, Maine, and Vero Beach. They made Vero their full-time home in 2004.
In her retirement, Tina was an active volunteer, assisting at many organizations, including the Boothbay Harbor Library and Indian River Shores Public Safety; at IRSPS, she helped secure a grant for a patrol boat.
Tina and Andy enjoyed travel, especially cruising the Mississippi River system on paddle-wheel steamships and visiting their granddaughters in Portland, Ore.
Tina was a passionate hockey fan, and a devotee of the New York Rangers…though they seldom justified her devotion! (In high school, she had been captain of Cony High School’s field hockey team, which went on to become Maine’s state champion under her leadership.)
Anyone who knew Tina can attest to her inner-strength, intelligence, positive outlook and willingness to help others.
Tina is survived by her son, Chris; daughter-in-law, Deidre; and granddaughters, Cassidy and Annabel.
