Completed in 2019, 507 Bay Dr. in Riomar Bay is living proof that high design and practical living are not mutually exclusive. The collaboration between CAL Builders, interior designer Leah Muller and landscape architect Mark Sartain brought about a lovely, luxurious, family-centered home.
“This is the quintessential Florida home, embracing relaxed waterfront living in a light-infused setting where modern European style meets coastal charm,” says Melissa Talley, Premier Estate Properties estate agent.
Sartain used the site’s topography to design a seamless flow from the house to the water, creating a resonant connection to the outdoors. He found inspiration in the work of Dutch artist Piet Mondrian that is evident in the geometric hardscape of the driveway and the series of ramps and steps that cascade toward the home’s 120 feet of river frontage.
“Looking back at the whole project, with the push and pull of the terraces, the patio spaces, the shape of the pool, the whole project kind of has this Mondrian effect,” Sartain explains.
Inside, the owner envisioned a space that was accessible and uncluttered, without the starkness often associated with minimalism. The result is a spacious, welcoming home.
In an interview with Florida Design magazine, interior designer Leah Muller noted, “My favorite part of the project is how my design team and I were able to push the boundaries of a traditional floor plan.” Through rich textures, mixed metals, and what she describes as “seductive materials,” they achieved a beautifully sophisticated aesthetic.
An impressive front door with frosted sidelights opens into the foyer, where the design shifts from the exterior black-and-white palette to one grounded in neutral tones with hints of color to accentuate the organic nature of the design.
The foyer opens into the great room, a space that invites guests to sit and take in views of the waterway through a series of sliding glass doors. Here, deep baseboards, beamed ceilings and floating shelves add touches of elegance.
Before you transition into the kitchen, the owners have a designated “formal” dining area that is close to the kitchen and a nearby wet bar.
The kitchen is a gathering place for casual family meals. With a 16-foot Pompeii quartz island serving as a prep station and a informal dining table, it’s clearly the hub of the home. A hidden walk-in pantry, coffee station and suite of Sub-Zero appliances add functionality.
Nearby, the powder room, mud room, laundry room and door to the four-car garage make upkeep easy. For ease of maintenance, there is a bench in the mud room where sandy shoes can be removed, and a dog wash station in the laundry room.
Just off the foyer, in the north wing, the music room features a fireplace with a geometric, white-glass tile face and built-in shelving.
Also in this wing, a generous guest suite and office give long-term guests a suite of rooms to themselves. The bedroom opens onto the covered lanai and could be used as a first-floor primary suite, allowing homeowners to live entirely on the lower level.
The upper level of the home can be reached by stairs or an elevator near the foyer. Upstairs, the “River Room” is the central gathering space. Currently used as a media room, it opens onto a spacious, covered balcony with water views. The space could serve as a family sitting room, a game room or homework haven. Balconies on both the front and rear of the home provide welcome access to the outdoors.
Two bedrooms share a Jack-and-Jill bathroom on one side of the upper level, while the primary suite with water views and balcony access, a laundry room and an exercise room occupy the other.
The elegant ensuite bath features a soaking tub and shower, dual walk-in closets, vanities and water closets – a soothing haven for the owner.
Outside, the covered lanai with roll-down screens has a summer kitchen, seating and dining areas, and an outdoor fireplace, perfect for relaxing evenings, entertaining or enjoying the saltwater pool with a sun shelf and spa. Lush greenery surrounding the backyard provides privacy and frames the river views.
“The expansive outdoor living areas are truly a standout – perfect for entertaining or quiet relaxation,” says Talley.
“A resort within itself, the home offers endless opportunities for boating, fishing, paddleboarding, swimming, sunning and relaxing – perfect for seasonal or year-round families,” adds Talley, noting the dock with a boat lift and kayak launch.
A detached guest house provides a private retreat. With vaulted ceilings and a kitchenette, there is ample space for long-term guests or family members. The full bath also serves as the pool bath via a separate entry.
Riomar Bay is a gated, riverfront community conveniently located between the bridges with easy access to beachside and mainland locations. It’s just a short walk, bike or golf cart ride to Quail Valley River Club, Riomar Country Club, Riomar Beach access, the City Marina, Riverside Park, Riverside Theatre, Vero Beach Museum of Art, Vero Beach Dog Park and shopping and dining on Ocean Drive.
