Update:
Workers tallied votes after polls closed at 7 p.m. Tuesday in what many considered a must-watch election season. The races for sheriff, school board and county commission were of high interest among constituents.
There was a 34.24 percent voter turnout for this year’s primary election in Indian River County, the supervisor of elections’ website shows. Out of 118,221 registered voters, there were 40,477 ballots cast, according to the 9:13 p.m. update.
The unofficial results were posted on the supervisor of elections’ website. As of 9:13 p.m., early votes, election day ballots and mail in votes were completely reported, the supervisor of elections website shows.

Residents began flocking to the polls Tuesday morning to cast votes for the primary election in Indian River County, a day which could determine several races. The polls will remain open until 7 p.m., according to the supervisor of elections office.
Voters must bring their photo IDs as they cast their ballots in the precincts where they reside. An interactive precinct map can be found on the Indian River County Supervisor of Elections Office website.
Florida is a closed primary state. Only voters who are registered members of political parties can vote for their respective party’s candidates in their party’s primary.
Supervisor of elections officials said the races for tax collector, along with board of county commissioners Districts 1 and 3, are universal primary contests. The winners of those races will be determined in the primaries.
The winners of the school board District 3 and 5 races will also be determined during the primaries, elections officials said. The winner of the highly anticipated sheriff’s race will be determined 11 weeks later during the Nov. 5 general election.
There are 118,221 active, eligible voters for the primary election, the elections’ website shows. Out of that number, 27,662 residents are listed as democrats, 60,302 are listed as republicans, 26,396 are listed as no party affiliation and 3,861 are listed as other.
Early voting was held Aug. 10 – Aug. 17.
The numbers so far for the votes that already have been casted show: 16,826 votes by mail, 8,955 votes during early voting, 322 votes on election day and four provisional votes. A provisional ballot is used to record a vote when there are issues with a voter’s eligibility that must be fixed before the vote can count.
