When it came time to retire, Walter and Lynnette David asked themselves, “Where do we go?” Not far, it seems. Having owned a vacation condo in Vero Beach for about 20 years, the island community was the first place that came to mind.

“We both really like the beach and Vero Beach. That cemented the choice,” shares Walter.

The couple was drawn to the ocean view at 4750 Hwy. A1A #6 at Surf Club. “From the back door, you walk 35 steps, and your next step is in the sand,” explains Walter.

“We both love the ocean. It’s ever-changing. It has its own personalities,” he continues.

In addition to the ocean views, Lynnette points out that the West Indies townhouse design, gorgeous kitchen, guesthouse over the garage and private courtyard are all enviable features they loved.

“It’s the only one for sale in the Surf Club, and it’s nicely priced,” says Dale Sorensen Real Estate broker-owner Matilde Sorensen.

The luxurious oceanfront community was built in 2017 by Vic Lombardi, owner of Water’s Edge Estates, LLC, and designed by architect Gregory Anderson, says Sorensen, noting the seawall and solid concrete block construction.

The team took the site of the old Surf Club Hotel and transformed it into an 11-unit luxury community with two-story, oceanfront townhomes in an intimate enclave.

With endless ocean views, Surf Club offers coastal living at its best. The traditional British West Indies architectural style features exposed rafter tails, smooth white stucco, herringbone railings, French doors and transom-topped doors and windows, which allow plenty of natural light to flow through.

Outdoor living options include an oceanfront terrace, sunrise and sunset balconies and a private courtyard. You can access the townhome through the courtyard, where there is an electric-heated plunge pool, gas fireplace and built-in grill, perfect for entertaining or relaxing after a day at the beach.

“On cool nights, we could have a fire in the fireplace out there and cool off in the plunge pool,” adds Lynnette.

A separate private staircase leads to a guest suite above the two-car garage. The guesthouse offers a spacious sleeping area, private bath, balcony and bar area with sink and beverage refrigerator.

“I like that the guesthouse over the garage allows guests to be somewhat independent, separate but right there,” says Lynnette.

From the courtyard, a stunning pair of French doors open into a vestibule, offering a clear path to a hallway that beckons you toward breathtaking ocean vistas. The interior has exquisite millwork, luxurious finishes and captivating ceiling details.

An elegant wooden staircase to the right leads to the second-floor landing. There is also an elevator to the bedrooms on the second floor. To the left, a set of French doors opens into a versatile space, which can be used as a media or family room, a mother-in-law suite with a private bath and separate entry to the courtyard, or a library or office, depending on your needs.

The powder room, under-staircase closet and elevator are easily accessible from the central corridor, which leads to the spacious and stylish great room at the back of the house.

The main living and dining areas offer a view of the backyard and ocean through a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows with transoms, expanding the great room to the outdoor patio.

“The only reason you’d leave that room is to go to the [upstairs] balcony,” Walter says of the ocean views from the great room.

In the great room, cozy accents, including built-ins, a double-tray ceiling and a fireplace, add to the coastal elegance.

The layout features an open-concept design with well-defined common spaces next to the breakfast area, dining room and kitchen.

The kitchen has high-end appliances, custom wood cabinetry, a natural stone countertop and a breakfast bar with seating.

The second floor living area can be accessed via the stairs or elevator, which opens at the center of the landing near the upstairs laundry room. The owner’s luxurious suite is located to the east and boasts a vaulted, nickel-board ceiling, hardwood floors, a walk-in closet and a private balcony with ocean views.

The elegant primary bathroom completes the suite with dual sinks, a water closet, a walk-in shower, and a luxurious soaking tub overlooking the beach.

The laundry room and elevator are between the owner’s suite and the ensuite guest bedroom, reached through the upstairs loft. Pocket doors separate the spaces and create a private sitting area.

This versatile space can be used as a bedroom, den, studio or playroom. From the guest suite, a covered Juliet balcony overlooks the pool and courtyard, so everyone has access to outdoor seating on the second floor.

Outside, overlooking the blue Atlantic, the shellstone patio abuts a generous green space that extends to the seawall. The private, gated beach access is mere steps from the covered oceanfront patio.

The location was a major factor in their decision to live at Surf Club, explains Walter. “You’re within walking distance of Central Beach and eight minutes from Publix. You’re very close to everything.”

Surf Club sits on a 2.5-acre site with 400 feet of direct Atlantic Ocean frontage. The property is within walking distance of a guarded public beach at Jaycee Park, shopping and dining. Riverside Park, the Municipal Marina, Vero Beach Dog Park, Riverside Theatre and the Vero Beach Museum of Art also are nearby.
