INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Detectives continue to investigate after a man’s body was found Sunday afternoon in a retention pond behind Sam’s Club, sheriff’s officials said. There were limited details available on the individual, who authorities described as homeless.

“Identification has been made but we are working on notification of next of kin,” said Sgt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson for the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

A Sam’s Club employee found the body floating face down in the pond about 5:30 p.m. just south of the store, located at 5565 20th Street and east of 58th Avenue, Jaworski said. The worker then dialed 911.

Sheriff’s detectives responded to the scene. The body was taken to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy, Jaworski said.

Deputies remained at the scene until about 1 a.m. as they combed through the area, which contains homeless camps nearby.
