INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Officials lifted a precautionary lockdown Wednesday at Storm Grove Middle School after deputies searched the campus following the discovery of a note that mentioned a possible bomb, officials said. A student found the note between two lockers and told a teacher, who then notified administration and the school resource deputy.
“It was a planted note. The corner of the note said ‘read me,'” said Sgt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office. Jaworski said the inside of the note described a bomb on campus.
The incident led to a nearly two-hour search at the campus, located at 57th Street and 62nd Avenue in Indian River County. Deputies determined the threat was not credible and have identified the student who wrote the note, Jaworski said.
“Detectives are working with the school board and parents to determine if any criminal charges will be filed,” Jaworski said.
The incident unfolded at the 1,007-student campus about 10 a.m. Wednesday. Students stayed in classrooms as deputies searched the school for any suspicious devices, Jaworski said.
“We quickly determined there was no credible threat,” Jaworski said, noting that the search did not heavily disrupt daily activities. “Movements were limited in the hallways and lunches were delivered to classrooms.”
Jaworski said deputies reviewed surveillance footage inside the hallways, which did not show anyone placing the note within the past few days.
“The note was placed some time ago and found today,” Jaworski said. “It was not written today. This was not an active threat.”
More information was expected to be released Thursday.
