David Osterhoudt, 56, was charged with second-degree manslaughter, officials said. Osterhoudt was held Thursday at the Dutchess County Jail.

It was not immediately clear how Osterhoudt and Barnes knew each other. Details on what both were doing in New York were not available.

New York State Police on Wednesday began investigating the death of Barnes, who they said recently arrived in the town of Wappingers Falls. Troopers and the Bureau of Investigation were called to a home about 2:10 p.m. after receiving reports of an unresponsive woman in a vehicle on Dorothy Heights, police said.

New York State Police personnel and emergency medical officials discovered the woman, later identified as Barnes, was dead. It was unclear if there was a motive that led to Barnes’ death.

Osterhoudt was arrested and arraigned in court. Then he was taken back to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail, $750,000 bond or $1.5 million partially secured bond, according to New York State Police. Osterhoudt was set to reappear in court at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Further details on the incident were not immediately available.
