Treasure Coast Girls Coalition Awarded AAUW Community Action Grant Funding, supports local projects for women and girls

WASHINGTON — The American Association of University Women (AAUW) has awarded a 2022-23 Community Action Grant to Treasure Coast Girls Coalition (TCGC) of Vero Beach, FL. The project allows participants to spend time on the Indian River Lagoon learning about Sea Turtles and how to be good stewards of our natural habitat.

The STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) Immersion activities aim to help girls/women explore and learn STEM-based opportunities locally. We are delighted to receive this exceptional award, and the local branch of AAUW played a tremendous role in helping the nonprofit apply for the grant. The ability to ignite the curiosity of young women through Marine Biology and STEM-focused workshops for girls living in marginalized communities is rare.

“TCGC’s mission changes the narrative, creates opportunities, and prioritizes projects encouraging girls to pursue STEM careers,” said Founder and Executive Director Shala Edwards. Edwards said, “We’re confident this award will continue to open doors to equity for girls and young women.”

AAUW is one of the world’s leading supporters of graduate women’s education: Over the past 134 years, it has provided more than $135 million in fellowships, grants, and awards to 13,000 women from 150 countries. AAUW is proud to be one of the nation’s largest educational funders for women of color.

About TCGC–Treasure Coast Girls Coalition, Inc. is a 501c(3) organization working with economically deprived girls. Its mission is “to empower girls and young women ages 9-18 through enhanced STEM Curriculum, Digital Technology, and Emotional Intelligence Training.”
