Francesco (Frank) Zappia Sr., 91, Vero Beach
March 08, 1931 – May 18, 2022
Francesco (Frank) Zappia Sr of Vero Beach FL passed into Eternal Life at home in the arms of his loving wife on May 18th. He is survived by his wife, Sandra, brother, Dominick (Sylvia), sister Cathy Welsh (Jerry), and brother-in-law Scott (Debbie). His father, Sam Zappia, mother, Mary Romeo and brother, Anthony predeceased him.
Frank was born in Massena New York on March 8, 1931. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He was an independent entrepreneur and owner of a sports bar and restaurants along with his father in Massena. When he sold the business and moved to Vero Beach in 2000, he held the oldest liquor license in New York State..60+years. He was an active hunter and fisherman. He always gave the first deer shot to the Bishop of the Ogdensburg NY Diocese. Bishop Barbarito was our Bishop there before he moved to the Palm Beach Diocese. Every year the large Italian community held a summer festival and the Bishop began the celebration with mass. Yes, the homemade Italian wine and delicacies were a plenty. He worked at the Indian River County Shooting Range for 5 years and our Sheriffs trusted him to train their grandchildren to respect the use/handling of firearms.
He grew up in the traditional Catholic Italian family where Mama had all her grandchildren gathered around her on Sundays as she shared her Italian cooking secrets. Frank inherited his love of cooking and he and his siblings always argued “mine are the best meatballs and only I have Mama’s recipe”. His children, Sandi, Tony, Frank Jr, Lori; 4 Grandchildren..Becca, Brian, David, Karleigh, 8 Great Grandchildren and 3 Great-Great Grandchildren, nieces & nephews will miss their friend, mentor and coach.
Frank did not venture to far from Massena until he and Sandra married and they were off to Europe, to Plati, Reggio Calabria, Italy the place of his parents birth. He enjoyed the many cruises, trips and Caribbean island hopping. His Catholic faith was an essential part of his life as was his Italian heritage a close second. He always first said he was Italian, than American, He was sent home from kindergarten because he only spoke Italian. Shortly his English blossomed. He was active in the church in Massena and after a month in Vero started ushering at St Helen Catholic Church and continued until his health began to falter. His wife continues to be active and support the ministries at St Helen.
Frank’s life was full and God blessed him with 91 years. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St Helen Catholic Church, Tuesday, May 24 at 11 a.m. and be live streamed and available for viewing for 30 days (sthelenvero.org). Interment will follow later at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery in Royal Palm Beach FL. A Celebration of Frank’s life will follow the Mass at the Italian American Civic Club, of which he was past President.
To family and friends – Frank says “Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free. I’m following the path God laid for me. I took His hand when I heard Him call. I wish you sunshine for tomorrow, not tears of sorrow. My life’s been full, I’ve savored so much..good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch. Perhaps my time seemed brief, don’t linger with tears. Rejoice in what we shared. God wanted me now; He set me free!”

He was born November 23, 1983 in Southhampton, New York and moved to Vero Beach, Florida from Hampton Bays, New York.

Robert Nolan, 89
September 03, 1932 – May 21, 2022
Robert Nolan, born 89 years ago in Woodridge, New Jersey passed on May 21, 2022.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Janet and their children, Kelly Nolan and Scott Nolan; grandchildren, Brandon Miller and Shawn Miller; great-grandchild, Lucas Miller.
Robert was a wounded Marine veteran in the Korean War and received the Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal, U.N. Service Medal, and National Defense Medal. Before his retirement, he was a well-known Electrical Contractor in Vero Beach for over 35 years.
He loved biking, hiking, and traveling. He enjoyed every adventurous trip taken with his wife to many places around the world.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Robert will be sorely missed by his family and many friends who know without a doubt that he has found peace after suffering a long series of various ailments and illness.

Joseph A. Smead, 88, Vero Beach
March 15, 1934 – May 19, 2022
Joseph A. Smead of Vero Beach, died at his Florida home on Thursday, May 19, 2022.
Born in Akron to Fredrick and Helen (Altermatt) Smead, Joe grew up in Cuyahoga Falls, attending St. Joseph’s School and graduating from St. Vincent High School. Joe then served in the U.S. Air Force; after his discharge he graduated from the University of Akron with a business degree. Joe worked for several years in public accounting. He was then appointed Treasurer of the City of Cuyahoga Falls and also served on the city Planning Commission. Joe purchased a card and stationery shop at the State Road Shopping Center called The Paper Basket. The store, eventually known simply as Smead’s, grew and expanded, becoming the go-to local spot for cards, gifts, and fine candies.
Joe married Mary Ann Pittenger and had six children. Joe then had the great fortune to meet Delores Schmidt; they married and moved to Vero Beach, FL, where Joe was very active in his parish, St. John of the Cross Church.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents and his older siblings, Fritz and Mary.
Joe’s survivors include his wife, Delores; son Kevin (Sue Kreusch), son Brian (Patty), daughter Karen (Gary Minke), daughter Kristin Whitney (Ken), son Eric, daughter Maureen Shaffer (Michael); grandchildren Spencer and Peter Smead, Melanie Smead, Shelly Debnath, Andrew and Brian Whitney, Jared Aspenwall and Nicholas Smead, and Michael Shaffer; great grandchildren Mira and Ella Debnath, and Michael, Emmy, and Kady Shaffer; and sisters, Carol Hervey and Dr. Rosemarie Smead.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church at 11am with a Graveside Service at South Florida National Cemetery at 2pm.

Christopher P. Kachele, 68, of Sebastian, Florida passed away May 16, 2022, at Holmes Regional Medical Center, surrounded by family. He was born May 14, 1954, in Carbondale, Illinois and spent his childhood in Cincinnati, Ohio. At the age of 19 he moved to Florida and received his bachelor’s degree in Linguistics with a minor in Psychology from the University of Florida and earned his Real Estate License. In 1974, he met his wife, Lorraine Kachele (nee Rovella), and they were married for 43 years. In 1978, they moved to Indian River County. For years Christopher worked at Florida Power Light as a service engineer. In 1996, he became an MRI technologist and worked until 2018. He spent his free time RVing, reading books, writing short stories, and listening to and discovering new music.
He also loved being around his family and is survived by his wife, Lorraine Kachele, his daughters Lorraine Davis (husband Adam Davis), and Frances Mitchell (husband Luke Mitchell), and his two sons Christopher Kachele (wife Pamela Martinez) and Michael Kachele (wife Elissia Stockard). He is also survived by his 4 grandchildren: Liam and Ethan Davis, Levi Kachele (Christopher and Pamela) and Michelle Kachele (Michael and Elissia).
He is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. George and Margaret Kachele, his sister Dr. Diane Kachele, and brother George “Tony” Kachele.

Ann Louise Holt, born in Huntington, West Virginia, went to be with our Lord on May 11, 2022 in Vero Beach, Florida where she and her late husband Rev. John A. Holt had moved for retirement.
Ann was a Pastor’s wife and a leader in church whenever her husband was serving. Their last church full time was Luther Rice Memorial in Silver Springs, Maryland, then to an Interim Pastor at First Baptist Church in Hurricane, West Virginia until retirement.
Ann is survived by her dear friend Dianna Gibson of Vero Beach, Florida and many other friends.
Per Ann’s request, there will be no services and interment will be in Huntington, West Virginia.

She was born to the late John and Bette Krauss on August 10, 1954 in Willow Grove, PA.
Pam was an active member of Grace Baptist Church. She was an avid lover of crafting, baking, card playing, shopping, and life in general but her greatest pleasure was being surrounded by her family and friends.
She leaves behind two brothers – Jack (Barbara), his children Beth (Jeff) Wentzel, Jed (Mandy) and Brett (Kristen) and nine great nieces and nephews – Kendra, Griffin, Zack, Kaitlyn, Johnny, Leo, Ben, Mallory, and Clark: Norton (Diane), his children Virginia (Jeremy) Glass, Jamie (Travis) Bernath, and Brenda (Chad) Gloyd and six great nieces and nephews – Tyler, Dillon, Michael, Lexi, Addy, and Austin.
A memorial service honoring Pam’s life will be held Saturday, May 21 beginning at 4:00 pm at Grace Baptist Church, 1285 43rd Ave., Vero Beach.

Alice Love Slaton, 101, Vero Beach
November 10, 1920 – May 13, 2022
Alice Love Slaton of Vero Beach, Florida passed away peacefully on May 13, 2022 while in the loving company of her family.
Alice Love was born to parents Earl and Maude Handley on November 10, 1920 in Huntington, WV. Alice, or “Lovey” as she was known to her friends, graduated from Shawnee High School and attended University of Louisville where she was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority. There she met Walter Leslie Slater whom she married in 1940 and gave birth to Linda Love Slater (1941 – 1992). He was killed during WWII on the U.S.S. John Penn that was sunk by enemy action on August 13, 1943.
In 1951 she married John William Slaton and over 71 happy and loving years together, life took her from Louisville, Kentucky, where she grew up, to homes with John in Illinois, Ohio, Delaware, Missouri, New Jersey, and Ohio again before settling in Vero Beach, Florida and summering at their home in Mountain Glen in Newland, North Carolina after John’s retirement.
Lovey was anything but boring. Always curious, she was a life-long learner. And while she was not overly adventurous, she was intrepid in her daily life. She was vivacious and loving. She loved to laugh and did so enthusiastically and often. She expressed her many opinions both passionately and often with humorous animation. She did not suffer fools gladly, and in private “simpleton” was a part of her regular vocabulary. Lovey was also very practical, and having grown up in the great depression she “knew the meaning of a dollar.”
In addition to her husband and children, she also loved playing bridge and tennis with gusto; as well as golf; going dancing with “Johnny;” listening to classical music, standards, and NPR radio; and watching Masterpiece Theater, Turner Classic Movies, C-SPAN, and tennis matches on television. Lovey was also a voracious reader. Breakfast was with the Wall Street Journal every day and in her leisure, she enjoyed history, biographies, and autobiographies in particular. She also loved animals and the family had many pets over the years.
Lovey devoted much of her time to taking care of her family while the children were growing up. She was a home room mother, field trip chaperone, Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and taught Sunday school. She was also a one-woman, non-stop shuttle service, taking the kids to school and to various activities over the years. “Sleepovers” were common at the Slaton house, which had a reputation for being a fun place to be, with the mom that was up for cookie baking and other messy activities. She was something of a jack-of-all-trades and though not among her passions, she was a good cook, seamstress, crocheter, and occasional crafter.
When Lovey moved into nursing care, her daughters found a small scrap of paper in her dresser drawer where, in her lovely penmanship she had written the quote, “No one who is loved is ever lost. No one who has touched a life, who has brought beauty to the world is ever truly gone. Those we cherish will always live on in memory.” Lovey will always be remembered, loved, and cherished.
Lovey was preceded in death by her brother, Samuel Earles Handley, and is survived by her husband, John William Slaton and two daughters, Melissa Jane Slaton and Carolyn Lee Neel and her husband, Daniel E. Neel, granddaughter Monica Denise Clay, and step- grandchildren Zachary James Neel, and Lacey Danielle Neel.

Victor “Vic” Walsh, 71, of Vero Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on May 15, 2022 after a short illness.
Vic was a kind man who was always willing to lend a hand to someone in need. He loved to make people laugh and was full of energy. He enjoyed the outdoors and nature, watching the History channel and Elvis.
Vic worked for the Kearny, NJ Board of Education for 30+ years before retiring in 2010. He cherished the many lifelong friends he made. Vic especially loved his family. He is survived by his daughter Kelly Walsh (Ben) of NJ, his loving and dedicated partner, Phyllis Breeze, his brother, Kevin Walsh, and many extended family members. Vic was predeceased by his son, Matthew and sister, Joanne MacGregor.
Vic’s wishes were for his ashes to be brought home to NJ and buried with his son.

Ruth Elizabeth Simmons (MacNeill), 82 years young, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2022 at her home in Sebastian, FL with family at her bedside. Originally from Yeadon, PA she moved to Philadelphia with her husband before eventually relocating to Sebastian, FL in 2002.
She is survived by her husband, John of 58 years; her four children: Ruth (Bill), Cheryl (Dave), Joann, and John (Joan); nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, William and Robert; many nieces and nephews; and multiple grand cats, dogs, and reptiles.
She was preceded in death by her parents William and Ruth MacNeill.

Edwin Charles Phelps, 98, Barefoot Bay
March 01, 1924 – May 03, 2022
In the early hours of May 3, this world lost a wonderful man with the passing of Edwin Phelps. He lived the 98 years of his life to the fullest and was the best father and husband to his family. Our dad was born in Clifton, NJ on March 1, 1924, the eldest child of Edward and Marion (Renkel) Phelps. As a boy, he would ride with the farm truck to Wayne, where he picked peas to earn a bit of money to help feed his family. A fisherman and entrepreneur from an early age, he tied flies and sold them at his grandfather’s cigar store in Paterson at the age of 12. In 1942, he graduated from Clifton High School and went to work at Curtis Wright in the personnel department. It was there that he met his future wife, Viola Anderson, when she applied for a job. They were married on April 9, 1944, in Carlstadt, NJ. At that time, Dad had enlisted in the Coast Guard, achieved the rank of Radioman 2nd Class, and served his country intercepting code during WWII while stationed on Long Island, NY and in Morocco. Until his dying day, he could tap out Morse Code like a second language. We grew up tapping out Morse Code at the dinner table many nights. He was not as successful teaching us how to box, another skill he learned in the Coast Guard!
When Dad returned home from serving in WWII, he worked for his grandfather at Phelps Engraving in Hawthorne, NJ. Eventually, he bought the business, renamed Graphic Engravers, Inc. and moved it to Paterson. He was an honest businessman and taught his children that honesty and developing personal relationships served you well in business and in life.
He and Viola moved to the “country,” Wayne NJ, in 1953 to a home that he built much of himself. The family grew to three children, and a big event for us was going to see Dad bowl on Friday nights at the T-Bowl on the Nevins Dairy team. He soon built a small barn, fenced off a corral, and bought a horse. That was the beginning of his life with horses; he always did everything well and jumped in with both feet. He started the Trail Riders 4-H Club in Passaic County and was a great role model for many young 4-H equestrians.
The Phelps family and horses moved to Stillwater, NJ in 1965 to a small farm that he named Sun Dial Acres. My parents enjoyed the best years of their lives with the most wonderful friends who became second families to us. Dad started the Chaps and Breeches 4-H Club in Sussex County and devoted much of his time to the equine industry. He was a member of the Equine Advisory Board for the State of New Jersey and fulfilled his dream to breed and race a Quarter Horse, Jag’s Sundial. He showed both English and Western horses, enjoyed trail rides with his Stillwater friends, and led many parades with his prize Quarter Horse, Bugger Wimpy.
At age 55, he decided he wanted to fish for the rest of his life, and that is exactly what he did. Retiring with Viola to Stuart, Florida and later moving to Barefoot Bay, Florida (the fishing was better there). Dad fished and played horseshoes right up until February 2022. He and Viola were avid shellers, and he shared his knowledge of shells with anyone who would listen. He was the past president of the Treasure Coast Shell Club and the Space Coast Shell Club. He won numerous awards for his artistic shell creations and Sailor’s Valentines made with shells. Shelling took him from the shell pits of Florida (fossil shells) to South America and the Caribbean Islands.
Always known for being a great dancer, he and Viola became members of a square dance team in Florida. At any event, he was the first person on the dance floor and would dance every dance; dancing the polka with him literally swept you off your feet and cleared the dance floor! He knew how to enjoy a good party that was balanced by working hard; Dad always gave 100 percent to anything he did.
Viola predeceased him in 2012, but he decided to stay in the warm salty air of Florida, coming north to Vermont and New Jersey to visit with his children for a month or so in the summer. His memory will remain forever with his children; Ellen Phelps, Linda Heller (Gary), and Carl Phelps (Nan). His grandchildren; Toby Heller, Liana (Heller) Hennings, and Pia Phelps. His great grandchildren; Renato Diaz-Phelps, Bjorn Diaz-Phelps, and Cooper Hennings. He is survived by his sister Dorothy Scheirer; his other siblings have passed before him. He will be remembered with a smile by his nieces and nephews, his neighbors (and horseshoe pitching friends) in Barefoot Bay.
With everything he had done in his very full life, the most important of all was providing a loving, safe, and very interesting childhood for his three children. He taught us to be honest, to be kind, love what you do, enjoy life, have a sense of humor, never stop learning, work hard, how to plant our own vegetables and how to bet on the Kentucky Derby. We never wanted for anything, and for his time and love we will be forever grateful. I will miss you forever, Dad. You were so loved in this life, and I told him that every day.

Sandie Dalrymple, 73, departed this world on Mother’s Day, on May 8th, 2022, in Sebastian, FL., with her daughters by her side. She was born in Vinton, Iowa, where she was raised on a farm. She was married to Gary Dalrymple for 20 amazing years. Sandie was a very talented artist, loved dogs, especially cocker spaniels, and was passionate about plants and gardening. She was an extremely giving person and spent countless hours making things for the people she loved. Sandie is survived by her two daughters, Michelle (Neal) and Jennifer (Ron), her stepson Tony, and her two sisters, Barb (Jim) and Marlys. Susan Confort, 75, Vero Beach
January 20, 1947 – May 19, 2022
Susan Confort was born on January 20, 1947, she died unexpectedly on May 19, 2022. She was born in New York and moved to Vero Beach Florida in 1989 shortly after marrying her now husband Richard Confort. She had four children Robert Rooney Jr, Sean Rooney, Deanna Rooney and Jason Rooney. She was welcomed into heaven by her beloved son, Sean Rooney, her children’s father, Robert Rooney Sr. and her parents and Siblings. She also has two stepsons Anthony and Joseph Confort. She loved her grandchildren very much Christeanna Wescott, Alexa Rooney, Angelique, Ashley, Paige, Alexandra and Angelo Confort, Tim Westfall and Pam Gool. She had 6 great grandchildren, the newest just a month when she passed Addison Grace Lanning, Mikayla, Michael, Olivia and Matthew Gool. She had amazing skills, she once worked on a farm, owned a hot dog truck, was a hairdresser, owned a florist, worked at an exotic paint company and most recently, Susan and her husband owned a company getting homes ready to sell. To say the least she had very many talents. She definitely had a great sense of humor and was a tell it like it is type of woman. You never questioned what she was thinking but you always knew she loved you. Besides her children, her other biggest accomplishment was being sober for over 30 years. She will be greatly missed and was loved by many. This is not goodbye but until we see you again. Love, your husband, children, and grandchildren.
