VERO BEACH – Gallery 14 is honored to be bringing the work of master artist Derek Gores to Vero Beach. Derek, who recycles magazines, maps, data and other paper materials to create his lush figurative works, is considered part of the Pop Surrealism or New Contemporary Movement. He exhibits globally with top galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, Paris, Miami and more.
The show, entitled: Derek Gores/COLLAGE COUTURE – Lush Figurative Works from Magazines, Maps, Notes and More! will run at Gallery 14 from Jan. 30 through Feb. 23.
The exhibit is sponsored by Dale Sorensen Real Estate, Melbourne Mercedes Porsche Audi, Bistro Fourchette, and Vero Beach Magazine.
There will be a reception, with Mr. Gores in attendance, on Friday, Feb. 2 from 5-8 p.m., as part of the First Friday Gallery Stroll.
Derek was recently commissioned to create the cover of Playboy Magazine, for The Limited Edition: Hugh Hefner Special Tribute Issue, which went on the newsstands nationwide in November.
The Hugh Hefner project utilized hundreds of bits of paper culled from the Playboy magazine archives. Other major commissions have included the 2013 Kentucky Derby commemorative poster, the 2014 Windsor Charity Polo Cup poster, as well as an iconic portrait of Barack Obama done in 2009, used to commemorate his inauguration.
“I like my pictures to barely come together with teasing little details,” Derek said. “The mind can’t help but wander, even when trying to focus on one thing. In the collages, some of the little bits I use are deliberate, but I’m after an end result more interesting than I could have planned. One friend calls it a ‘Zen Narrative.’”
Also, featured will be work in oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, collage, sculpture, ceramic, jewelry and photography by artist-owners Edgardo Abello, Lila Blakeslee, Barbara du Pont, Beth-Anne Fairchild, Mary Ann Hall, Barbara Landry, Deborah Morrell Polackwich and Dorothy Napp Schindel. And, represented artists Walford Campbell, Joan Earnhart, Diana Feuer, Terry Green, Mia Lindberg, Viola Pace Knudsen, Francis Mesaros, Michael Robinson, and Carol Staub.
Gallery 14, located at 1911 14th Ave., Vero Beach, is open Tues – Fri 10-5 p.m. and Saturday 10-4 p.m. or by appointment.
