Earlier this year, the Sunrise Rotary Club of Vero Beach donated funds for BioSand water purification filters to an impoverished area of Domincan Republic near Puerto Plata.
Each of these filters provides 10 people 47 liters of drinkable water per hour. The filters last over 10 years and are easy to use and maintain. They transform dirty water into clean drinkable water.
Martin Lewis, Co-chair of the World Community Service Committee, came up with the idea of the Sunrise Rotary Club providing dollar for dollar matching funds for any pledged BioSand filter money. Enough money was collected and sent to the Dominican Republic to purchase 106 bio sand water filters providing clean drinking water to over 1,000 people.
