INDIAN RIVER SHORES — A construction worker has non-life threatening injuries after two of his fingers got caught in a concrete mixer and were cut off, emergency officials said.
The accident happened about 9 a.m. Wednesday at a construction site at Oyster Cut and Waxmyrtle Way in Indian River Shores, said Indian River Shores Public Safety Cpt. Mark Shaw.
The man, along with other workers, were mixing concrete when the man’s fingers got stuck in the machine.
The top part of two of the man’s fingers, going down to almost near the knuckle, were cut off.
“It was a decent chunk (of the fingers), that’s for sure,” Shaw said.
The man was conscious when he was taken by ambulance to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, Shaw said. He remains in stable condition.
Crews were able to get the severed finger parts, which were covered in cement, out of the mixer and put them in ice, Shaw said.
Shaw said it’s unclear whether the two finger parts will be able to be reattached to the man’s right hand. A concrete mixer, or cement mixer, is a machine with a revolving drum, often motor-driven, that mixes cement, sand, gravel and water to produce concrete.
