GIFFORD — The Gifford Youth Orchestra will hold a free summer camp July 29-Aug. 2 for children between the ages of 8 and 18 from its and neighboring communities.
The camp will take place at the GYO Modular Unit (behind the Gifford Youth Achievement Center) daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The Gifford Youth Achievement Center is located at 4875 43rd Ave. in Vero Beach. Pre-registration is required by calling Iva Powell at (772) 563-7072.
The summer camp, in its second year, “lets the children cool off in the pool, make new friends, and try out some new instruments,” says Dr. Crystal Bujol, the GYO’s co-founder and artistic director. “It introduces children who are not members to the Gifford Youth Orchestra and provides them some fun time learning a little more about music.
“It also brings our GYO students together more closely,” she says. “They come from different schools throughout the county and the camp helps them bond at the same time they fine-tune their skills and knowledge in a fun way.”
As well as the pool, the camp will offer music, crafts, drumming, piano and string performances.
Among staff members will be Vero Beach piano teacher Sue Lorimier, violinist Safa Elzein, GYO Program Director Iva Powell, and Dr. Bujol.
“Demand for spaces at our camp is always greater than our capacity,” says Dr. Bujol, “so it’s mandatory to make reservations.”
