Lace up your sneakers and mark your calendars for the Saturday, May 4 breakfast grand opening of DeSoto Park in Satellite Beach, Brevard County’s first public park with adult-oriented outdoor fitness and exercise equipment.
State and county officials are being invited to the 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. event because the equipment, now very much up and running, represents a national trend to plan and pay for activities for active seniors who are becoming a majority in the area, rather than providing playgrounds only designed for children.
“Yes, the word has definitely gotten out (about the park with the unique equipment) and folks are out there all day, which I am very glad to see. We have received nothing but compliments so far,’’ said Public Works Director Allen Potter.
Desoto Park is actually a stormwater facility centered around a 1.54-acre retention pond which treats stormwater from a 293-acre drainage basin before it empties into the Indian River Lagoon.
Concrete pads were earlier put in by the city for 10 stations of Greenfields Outdoor Fitness gym equipment purchased for $35,800.
Breakfast from the Wicked Pineapple will be available for purchase at the event, which will also feature Zumba by Rochelle, free blood pressure screenings and exercise challenges with prizes.
Examples of the equipment in Desoto Park include a four-person leg press, four-person twisting station, single recumbent bike, rowing machine, and a two-person accessible vertical press.
