Free tax preparation helps local families maximize refunds and save on filing costs
VERO BEACH, May 26, 2026 – United Way of Indian River County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program wrapped another successful tax season, returning more than $2.05 million in tax refunds to local residents.
This year, the program provided free tax preparation services to 1,934 individuals and families, helping clients receive an average refund of $1,253. With an average annual income of $29,727, many of those served are working households and retirees for whom every dollar makes a difference.
In addition to refunds, VITA helped local taxpayers claim more than $639,000 in tax credits, including Earned Income Tax Credits, Childcare Tax Credits, and Education Credits. The program also saved clients an estimated $425,480 in paid tax preparation fees.
“For ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households and families living paycheck to paycheck, these dollars are critical,” said Meredith Egan, CEO of United Way of Indian River County. “When the cost of essentials continues to rise, a tax refund or savings on preparation fees can help families catch up on bills, reduce debt, or create a small financial cushion. VITA helps ensure our neighbors keep more of what they have earned.”
This year’s program was powered by 44 IRS certified volunteers, who contributed 3,207 hours of service to support the community. Client surveys showed that 91 percent reported an excellent experience, and 86 percent returned to use the service again, highlighting the program’s continued value and trust within the community.
United Way’s VITA program is offered annually as part of the organization’s broader work to improve financial stability across Indian River County and is possible thanks to our generous sponsors, Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital and Offutt Barton Schlitt, CPA.
