VERO BEACH — Heavy April showers rained down across Vero Beach, breaking two rainfall records back-to-back for the city this week, meteorologists said.
On Wednesday, Vero Beach received 1.62 inches of rainfall, beating the previous daily rainfall record of 0.84 inches last set in 1973, said Robert Haley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Melbourne. The showers continued throughout Thursday, with Vero Beach reporting 3.84 inches of rainfall by the evening, beating the old record of 1.72 inches set in 1944.
“There were some reports of minor flooding in streets and ditches, but no reports of persistent flooding,” Haley said. “We still have rain bands passing this evening.”
There will be a 20 percent chance of showers Friday afternoon, with gusts as high as 25 mph. The day will be mostly sunny with a high near 78 degrees, which will dip near 65 degrees at night, meteorologists said.
Saturday and Sunday will also be sunny with highs near 78 degrees. The evenings will be partly cloudy with low temperatures in the mid-60s.
“There will be dry conditions on the weekend going into next week,” Haley said.
An Indian River County burn ban – originally issued Feb. 7 because of dry conditions – was lifted March 18 following sporadic showers, leading to a reduced wildfire risk, officials said.
