INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 61-year-old Palm Bay man was killed in a single-vehicle wreck that led officials to block all northbound lanes along Interstate 95 for several hours on Friday. All lanes were reopened by Saturday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

“The patient was in cardiac arrest upon our arrival,” said Steve Greer, Assistant Fire Chief with Indian River County Fire Rescue.

The deadly wreck was reported shortly before 5:30 p.m. Friday on northbound I-95 near mile marker 157, troopers said. The single-vehicle crash involved a 2000 red Ford Ranger.

Troopers said the driver was traveling northbound in the center lane on the interstate, just north of County Road 512. For an unknown reason, the pickup veered to the left off the roadway and overturned in the grassy median, causing the driver to be ejected, according to troopers.

“Bystanders began CPR and deputies continued life-saving measures on scene,” said Lt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver was taken by ambulance to Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, where he was pronounced dead, Greer said.

“Due to the severity of the incident and ongoing investigative work, multiple lanes were closed for an extended period of time,” Jaworski said late Friday.
