INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A woman walked outside of her home and found a non-native, non-venomous visitor resting on the side of her house earlier this week. The unwelcomed culprit was a 9-foot-long boa constrictor that slithered its way into the woman’s yard.

“She went outside and it startled her. So, she called 911,” said Lt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson for the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office. No injuries were reported.

The incident happened outside of the single-family residence on Sunday afternoon. Deputies responded to the home in the 800 block of 4th Lane, west of U.S. 1 and south of Vero Beach.

Deputies spotted the large snake on the side of the residence. A deputy used a catch pole to hold the snake’s head before grabbing it, Jaworski said.

The boa constrictor was turned over to animal control.

“Snakes are common in Florida, but if residents encounter large non-native snakes like boa constrictors, they can call the sheriff’s office, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission or a local trapper, especially if they are concerned for family members or pets,” Jaworski said.
