What and Where: The term “hidden gem” is an apt description for The Oar. Confusingly tucked away in downtown Vero, with its entrance off a small inner court, this restaurant occupies space that long-time residents will recall once housed the much-loved Melody Inn. Helmed by chef-owner Chris Lawrence – a Culinary Institute of America grad who spent years as a sous chef at John’s Island – The Oar is very much worth tracking down.

Adult Beverages: Cocktails, and decent wines by glass from short list.

Ambiance/Atmosphere: Attractive room.

Reservations: Recommended.

Price: $$$

Rating: Five stars

Overall Verdict: The creative dishes Chef Chris unveils night after night have turned The Oar into one of our very favorite restaurants. Whether it is an oyster appetizer, his latest seafood entree, or a simple dish like fresh pappardelle pasta with Italian sausage which on a recent visit was absolutely sublime, his dishes never fail to delight. And his apple fritters with maple walnut ice cream were the best dessert of this kind we encountered in our holiday season dining.
