For Dan and Vickie Lautenbach, the art of making a house a home has been honed over a lifetime of travel. Longtime executives with IBM, the couple relocated 17 times during their careers, living everywhere from Texas to Paris, France. When they decided to retire and downsize from two homes to one permanent sanctuary in Vero Beach, the couple knew exactly what they wanted.
They found it at 281 Palm Island Lane, a home exuding British West Indies elegance and charm in the quiet enclave of Palm Island Plantation, one of the most architecturally impressive communities on the barrier island.
Architectural details like a brick-paved driveway, carriage doors on the garage, wide eaves with exposed rafter tails, and decorative pineapple accents flanking the gate to the courtyard entry create a sense of excitement upon arrival, showcasing the home’s custom quality and authentic style.
The 3-bedroom, 3.5-bath, 3,211-square-foot, two-story home was designed by architect Greg Anderson to maximize privacy while taking advantage of Florida’s bright, light-filled environment, and constructed by Westmark Construction, known for its millwork and fine attention to detail.
“It’s a very lovely 2005 build,” says Luke Webb and Associates broker Luke Webb of the high-end construction. As a developer spec home, it has numerous notable upgrades.
Stepping into the foyer, guests are greeted by soaring, coffered ceilings and double crown molding that create a sense of volume, openness and elegance in the formal living room at the center of the house. French doors open onto the screened lanai. A gas fireplace anchors the space, giving it a cozy charm.
The floorplan offers functional luxury with single-level living on the main floor and upstairs guest accommodations, making daily life and entertaining effortless. “This house is perfect for a couple that may be retired or empty nesters with grandkids or kids who come for visits,” notes Webb.
“We thought the homes [in Palm Island Plantation] were really charming, and we liked it because everything was on the first floor,” recalls Vickie. The residence balances that preferred single-level livability with a refined aesthetic.
The interior design reflects the Lautenbachs’ sophisticated yet grounded approach – a skill Vickie honed as the former owner of Vero Beach boutique Elegance by the Sea.
“In my business, I always said we want it to be timeless, but we want it to be comfortable and elegant as well,” Vickie explains.
That mission was accomplished by blending the home’s historical British West Indies aesthetic with treasures like the dining room table from Hong Kong and rugs from Paris gathered during a lifetime of travel. Vickie uses a distinct strategy to make her eclectic collection work in any setting: “I’ve always kept my furniture all white and just added color.”
With the option to negotiate the purchase of the lovingly curated furnishings, this home offers a turnkey opportunity to step into a lifestyle built on an aesthetic of approachable beauty and sophisticated comfort.
The house is a seamless blend of formal and casual spaces. The split plan allows for complete privacy in the east wing, where the primary suite is located.
Soothing views of the preserve and swimming pool contribute to the serene setting of the suite, along with warm wood flooring, two walk-in closets with built-ins and a luxurious bathroom featuring dual sinks, a jetted tub, a shower and a water closet.
The west wing houses a wet bar, a breakfast nook, the kitchen and the family room. The kitchen, which features a gas cooktop and newer, large-scale appliances, has a warm, textural quality. The formal dining room, laundry room and garage access are conveniently located nearby.
The family room, with a vaulted, beadboard ceiling opens to the screened summer kitchen, creating a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor living.
“The kids could be in the pool, or we could be outside,” Vickie recalls. “It’s easy to do all those things with this floor plan.”
Upstairs, the layout features a loft office and two guest suites, one with a morning balcony and one with an evening balcony, ensuring guests can enjoy the natural world any time of day or evening.
Outside, the backyard is perfect for pets and grandchildren. You can dip in the pool, lounge in the sun, enjoy a cup of coffee or sip a glass of wine while sitting in one of the two screened areas.
“Everything faces to the south,” Webb says, noting the Old Florida renovation of the adjacent Jones Pier conservation area, with a historic home and fruit stand. “That’s a county-owned recreation area,” he continues, noting that the orientation ensures that the backyard remains a private sanctuary, lushly landscaped and but open to colorful sunset views.
Palm Island Plantation is a guard-gated, ocean-to-river community that offers resort-like amenities. Within the 58-acre British West Indies development, the oceanfront beach club offers a heated pool, spa, private cabanas and a bar. You can work out at the fitness center, swim in the community pool, relax in the steam rooms or swing a racquet on the Har-Tru tennis court. Boat slips are available at the River Cabana, which provides deep-water docking and a river deck on the Indian River Lagoon.
The historic Jungle Trail and Environmental Learning Center are just around the corner, and it’s a short drive to shopping and dining in Vero’s famous island village. Enjoy cultural events at Riverside Theatre and the Vero Beach Museum of Art, located among Riverside Park’s fairytale oak trees.
