INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Family, colleagues and first responders state and nationwide will pay their final respects to Sgt. Terri Sweeting-Mashkow at a funeral next week at the Corporate Air Hangar, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office. Sweeting-Mashkow, 47, of Indian River County, was fatally shot on Nov. 21 while serving an eviction at a home in the Bermuda Club – a gated, beachside neighborhood.
Sheriff’s officials asked community members to watch Mashkow’s service through livestream.
“To ensure that family members, Indian River County Sheriff’s Office employees and first responders can attend, we kindly request that community members express their support by joining us via the livestream,” sheriff’s officials said. “The service will be broadcast on our sheriff’s social media platforms, including YouTube and Facebook.”
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1 at the Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, 1655 27th Street, Vero Beach. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. at the Corporate Air Hangar, 2614 Airport N. Drive, Vero Beach.
Sweeting-Mashkow will be buried at Crestlawn Cemetery, located off Old Dixie Highway in Vero Beach. Sweeting-Mashkow worked at the sheriff’s office for 25 years.
“We are heartbroken to share the passing of Sergeant Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, who was killed in the line of duty on November 21, 2025, while bravely serving her community,” representatives from Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory said. “Her courage, compassion, and unwavering dedication will never be forgotten.”
David Long, 76, a longtime locksmith who lived in the county, was also shot during the attempted eviction and later died on Sunday at the hospital. The shooter, Michael Halberstam, 37, was shot multiple times after exchanging gunfire with deputies. Halberstam died on Saturday at the hospital.
A second deputy, Tino Arizpe, was shot in the shoulder. Arizpe was hospitalized and released on Sunday. Arizpe continues to recover from his injuries at home.
Dozens of law enforcement officers escorted Sweeting-Mashkow’s body in a procession to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Fort Pierce.
Deputies and residents organized a makeshift memorial with flowers, balloons and tiny American flags next to a portrait of Sweeting-Mashkow atop a sheriff’s vehicle, in front of the sheriff’s office. On Sunday, residents lined the Merrill P. Barber Bridge on both sides and brought blue candles, blue lights and American flags to honor Sweeting-Mashkow.
