INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — David Long, a locksmith who was shot along with two deputies during an eviction at a beachside community on Friday, has died, sheriff’s officials said. He was 76 years old.
Sheriff’s officials said Long was known for his dedicated service and kind demeanor. Officials said Long will be deeply missed by family, friends and all who knew him.
“Our hearts are broken once again by this tragic news. David Long was a resident of our community, a dedicated professional who was simply doing his job when he was caught in an unthinkable act of violence,” Sheriff Eric Flowers said in a statement.
“His loss, following Sergeant Mashkow’s, is a reminder of the sacrifices made, not just by our sworn deputies, but by the everyday heroes who assist us. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”
The shooter, Michael Halberstam, 37, died from his injuries on Saturday at the HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce. Sgt. Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, a 25-year veteran of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, was killed in the shooting.
Sweeting-Mashhow, 47, was posthumously promoted from deputy to sergeant.
A second deputy, Tino Arizpe, was shot in the shoulder. Arizpe was released from the hospital on Sunday and recovering at home, sheriff’s officials said.
Deputy Gary Farless, the third deputy at the scene of the shooting, escaped injury.
Long accompanied Sweeting-Mashkow, Arizpe and Farless as they served an eviction on Halberstam. Halberstam’s mother had wanted her son removed from the home.
Deputies were called to the beachside, gated community Friday morning in the 1100 block of Governors Way. Halberstam’s mother stayed outside as deputies walked in.
When deputies stepped into the entry way, Halberstam grabbed a gun and began firing indiscriminately, sheriff’s officials said. Sweeting-Mashow was fatally struck, and Arizpe and Farless exchanged gunfire with Halberstam.
Dozens of law enforcement officers escorted Sweeting-Mashkow’s body in a processional to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Fort Pierce on Friday evening.
