Riverside Theatre’s production of the cult favorite “Little Shop of Horrors” opens Tuesday, Oct. 21, and runs through Nov. 9 on the theater’s Stark Stage. The comic musical, by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, tells the strange story of Seymour, a timid flower shop clerk who discovers an unusual plant that brings him fame – and an unexpected thirst for human blood. He names the plant “Audrey II” after the woman he secretly loves, only to find himself caught between affection and ambition as the plant’s appetite grows. The story has quite the provenance. The popular 1986 film came from the 1982 stage musical, which was influenced by Roger Corman’s 1960 B-movie “The Passionate People Eater,” inspired by Arthur C. Clarke’s variation of H.G. Wells’ 1894 short story called “The Flowering of the Strange Orchid.” The show earned multiple awards, including the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. Riverside Theatre’s production is directed and choreographed by DJ Salisbury. Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. matinees on Wednesdays, select Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets start at $50. Riverside Theatre is at 3250 Riverside Park Dr., Vero Beach. For more information, call 772-231-6990 or visit riversidetheatre.com.
