INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — No injuries were reported after a sea mine dating back to the early 1900s was found Wednesday along the shore at Anglers Cove Beach in south county. Patrick Space Force Base’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team traveled from Brevard to assess and remove the device, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

The mine was not live, according to Lt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson for the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
“It is believed that the rough surf caused by Hurricane Erin may have uncovered these remnants. There have been no evacuations other than the immediate beach area around the device,” Jaworski said. “There is no immediate threat to the public at this time, and authorities will remain on scene until the device is safely removed.”
Indian River County sheriff’s deputies, along with fire rescue crews, responded to reports of fragments of an old military explosive discovered Wednesday morning in the 1900 block of Anglers Cove. Officials said they believe the ordnance is a Hertz Horn Sea Mine.
Deputies coned off the area from the public. The explosive ordnance disposal team safely removed the device a little before noon.
“We appreciate the cooperation of all residents and visitors in maintaining a safe distance from the area,” Jaworski said.
