A human flotilla of people-powered vessels and swimmers gathered around Sexton Beach in the early morning hours of July 4th to toast the nation’s 249th birthday during the annual Swim to the Wreck. The throng of thalassophiles once again paddled, pedaled, floated and stroked their way out to the historic wreck of the SS Breconshire, a British steamship that sank in 1894.
The wreck, which lies in approximately 15 feet of water about a quarter of a mile offshore, has now become an artificial reef, teeming with fish and other sea life. Known by locals as the “Boiler Wreck,” it draws residents and visitors alike as a popular dive destination. The patriotic pilgrimage began 40 years ago and has grown meaningfully over each decade. This year, some 1,000 participants made their way to where an American flag had been hoisted several days earlier, and was now billowing in the salty breeze. The revelry continued onshore with a Swim to the Wreck After Party at Costa d’Este to benefit the United Way of Indian River County. The event offered everyone an opportunity to support local families through a raffle and silent auction.
