INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A Fort Pierce woman was killed and two others critically injured after the car they traveled in veered off the interstate, struck a concrete pole and two trees before bursting into flames late Friday. The impact ejected the driver and a passenger from the vehicle, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle wreck occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on Interstate 95 northbound, near mile marker 159, highway troopers said. The crash was just south of the Brevard-Indian River County border line.
A 31-year-old man from Georgia was driving the 2018 Kia Stinger with two passengers – both women from Fort Pierce, ages 21 and 35, reports show. For an unknown reason, the car drifted to the right off the roadway and veered onto the grass shoulder.
The vehicle then struck a road sign, a tree, a utility pole and a second tree, reports show. Troopers said two people were thrown from the car after it slammed into the second tree.
One of the women from Fort Pierce was pronounced dead at the scene, but it was not immediately clear which one. The man and other woman were taken to Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.
Highway troopers were investigating the cause of the fatal wreck.
