INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A man found with a fatal gunshot wound Wednesday south of the Sebastian Inlet State Park likely died from a self-inflicted injury, deputies said. The man was in his 40s and from Santa Rosa County, according to Capt. Joe Abollo, a spokesperson for the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
“While the medical examiner will make the final ruling, all indications point to it being a suicide,” said Lt. Kevin Jaworski, another spokesperson for the agency.
A group of people were fishing then walked along a trail when they discovered the body with a gunshot wound to the head about 7 p.m. in the 13000 block of State Road A1A, Abollo said. The body was found on land near the river side of S.R. A1A, not far from the mangroves, according to Jaworski.
It was not immediately clear how long the body had been at the location.
Deputies found a pistol still in the man’s hand, Abollo said. Abollo said deputies recovered the firearm.
The man’s next of kin was notified, Abollo said. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause of death.
