Toni Elaine Russ-Green, 61, Gifford

1963 – May 20, 2025

Toni Elaine Russ-Green was called home on May 20, 2025, at 61. Born in Gifford, Florida, in 1963, she was the daughter of the late Deacon Sylvester “Leroy” Russ and Deaconess Ollie Rose Russ. Toni grew up in a large, close-knit family and had a happy childhood.

A proud graduate of the Vero Beach High School Class of 1981, Toni was a member of the Fighting Indians Band. She served as captain of both the award-winning Flag and Rifle Corps, taking great pride in creating halftime routines for football games, participating in pre-game pep rallies, and leading the squads in competitions throughout the state.

From a young age, Toni dreamt of becoming a teacher. It was no surprise to those who knew her when she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education from Bethune-Cookman University (College). After graduating, she dedicated herself to a teaching career that spanned 39 years. Toni particularly enjoyed working with students with special needs and was employed at Amos P. Godby High School in Tallahassee, Florida, at the time of her passing.

Throughout her career, she worked at several schools in Florida, using her skills and compassion to help students achieve their educational goals. She was well-liked by faculty, staff, and especially her students, whom she frequently rewarded with treats and praise while also administering discipline when necessary. Toni was a leader among her colleagues as well as a mentor and trusted confidant for new teachers. She was also an unwavering resource for parents seeking guidance and resources to help their children succeed in the classroom.

Toni enjoyed baking, crafts, and antique shopping in her spare time. Known for her sweet potato pies and oxtails, she was an avid reader and loved listening to her extensive collection of audiobooks during her daily commutes to and from school.

Toni was a born-again Christian and loved her family more than anything in this world second only to God. She married the love of her life, Darell Green, Sr., of Daytona Beach, Florida, on June 25, 1988. They welcomed their first child, Darell Green, Jr., the following January. As their love grew, they expanded their family, later welcoming daughters Chelsea and Vanester. Toni and Darell always emphasized the importance of education to their children and took pride in the fact that they all completed high school and earned college degrees.

She is survived by her husband: Darell Green, Sr. of Madison, FL; daughters: Deshika Wingfield of Daytona Beach, Florida, Chelsea and Vanester Green of Tallahassee, FL; sons: Darell Green, Jr. of Tampa, FL and Jamaal Jolly of Orlando, FL; brother: Steve Russ, Sr. (Melissa) of Vero Beach, FL; sisters: Valerie Eutsey (Byron) of West Palm Beach, FL, LeaShea and Sabrina Russ of Vero Beach, FL, Joy Russ-Murray (Hans) of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Odo Hernandez (Efren) of Vero Beach, FL; grandchildren: Deandre Wingfield and Brandon Mitchell of Daytona Beach, FL; sisters-in-law: Brenda Wallace (Jimmy) of Atlanta, GA and Audrey Perry of Pearland, TX; brothers-in-law: Eddie Lewis of Savannah, GA, Tharell Van Lewis of Tallahassee, FL, Gregory Lewis of Daytona Beach, FL, Robert Lewis of Los Angeles, CA; and a host of aunts uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, beloved friends, and students.

May we all remain comforted by the memory of her beautiful smile, cheerful personality, heartfelt laugh, ability to make others laugh, and gentle demeanor. Toni will be forever loved, eternally missed, highly respected, and never forgotten.
