Sebastian, FL — May 27, 2025 — Treasure Coast Girls Coalition (TCGC) is proud to announce it has been awarded a $10,000 grant from United Way of Indian River County to support its year-round STEAM, digital literacy, and emotional intelligence programming for girls ages 9–18. This vital investment will help mobilize much-needed resources for ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families in historically underserved communities throughout the County.

According to the Florida Department of Education, more than 53% of students in Indian River County are economically disadvantaged. In areas like Gifford and Fellsmere, where generational poverty intersects with limited access to enrichment programs, the need for culturally relevant, girl-centered education is both urgent and undeniable.

“United Way’s support is not just a financial investment — it’s a signal that community-led, grassroots solutions in North County matter,” said Shala Edwards, Visionary Founder and Executive Director of Treasure Coast Girls Coalition. “This grant allows us to continue closing the opportunity gap for girls by providing them with the structure, skills, and mentorship they need to thrive.”

While United Way has traditionally had a limited presence in North County, this new funding relationship marks a critical step toward bridging the geographic and social equity divide. TCGC’s programming includes after-school and summer enrichment rooted in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math), career exploration, leadership development, and emotional wellness.

“We believe that when you educate and elevate a girl, you uplift a whole community,” Edwards added. “We are deeply honored to begin this partnership with United Way IRC, and we look forward to a shared commitment to impact, transparency, and bold outcomes for our youth.”
