GIFFORD — A man is in custody following a Mother’s Day shooting that left two other men with life-threatening injuries, deputies said. Sheriff’s officials said the shooting was an isolated incident and there was no ongoing threat to the public.

“We are still in the very early stages of this investigation. Our detectives and crime scene team will be working for some time to determine the facts surrounding the shooting incident that occurred today,” Sheriff Eric Flowers said. “We encourage anyone with information to come forward and share what you know.”

Indian River County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of gunfire shortly before 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the 4200 block of 32nd Avenue, north of 41st Street in Gifford. The injured men with multiple gunshot wounds rode together to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital, said Capt. Joe Abollo, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.

One of the men was then flown to Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne and listed in unstable condition, Abollo said. The man at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital was listed in critical condition.

Deputies searched the crime scene area and detained the man they believed to be the shooter. It was not immediately clear how the three men knew each other.

Detectives recovered a firearm from the vicinity. A motive behind the gunfire was not immediately available.

The sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division will continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the deadly shooting. Anyone with information about the shooting should contact sheriff’s Det. Phil Daughterty at 772-978-6163.

Tipsters can remain anonymous by contacting Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-800-273-TIPS or tcwatch.org.
