Kiwanis at Fellsmere Elementary

The Vero-Treasure Coast Kiwanis Club has taken on a major restoration project at Fellsmere Elementary School. The planning began several months ago with the K-Kids Club at the school. The K-Kids wanted to create a project that would celebrate the schools A rating achievement.  With the help of Annie Arce (Club faculty advisor) and Martin Gonzalez (Kiwanis advisor), the K-Kids designed the Oasis project. A landscape plan was crafted, a budget was determined, and work schedule was created.

This past Saturday we started putting in the finishing touches to the Fellsmere Elementary School Oasis. The space will be used as an informal classroom and meeting area. The transformation from a barren weed field to a student and faculty Oasis is well underway. This weekend we had 25 volunteers from the Citrus farmers, Fellsmere Elementary K-Kids, Sebastian High School Key Club, teachers, and FES parents.

This was our 3rd workday so far. It has been great seeing all the students come out to help once again. Showing students the value of service leadership is what the Kiwanis Clubs are all about. The mural was designed by the Fellsmere K-Kids and is being painted by the K-Kids and the Key Club. The mural will be finished in another week or so and we plan to have a dedication of the Oasis later in May.

Thanks to all the donors and volunteers that have supported this amazing project! It takes a lot of generous people to make a difference in our communities. The mulch and sod was donated by Green Side Up Landscape, the plants were bought with generous grants from the Indian River Garden Club, Kiwanis Florida Foundation, Vero-Treasure Coast Kiwanis Club, and Al Sammartino. The t-shirts were provided by Jay Shechter for each of the volunteers.
