First annual meta-blazers sphero competition launches a new tradition in STEAM learning

Indian River County, Florida– 4.7.25– On Saturday, April 12th, the gymnasium at Sebastian River High School will be buzzing with excitement and innovation as it hosts the First Annual Meta-Blazers Sphero Competition. Over 70 students from 7 local elementary schools will come together for an afternoon filled with STEAM challenges, teamwork, and creativity.

Following the elementary track meet, the young coders will dive into a series of thrilling, hands-on challenges. Working in pairs, students will compete in five engaging activities that will put their coding and problem-solving skills to the test, including:

  • Triathlon Challenge
  • Space-Themed Light Sensor Challenge
  • Mars-Themed IR Communications Challenge
  • Rescue Mission
  • Space Junk Clean-Up Engineering Design Challenge

Each team will have multiple opportunities to refine their code and strategies, submitting their best runs for judging. When not competing, students will explore practice stations, engage in qualifier activities, and enjoy the fan-favorite Sphero Playground, featuring fun activities like bowling, soccer, obstacle courses, and the exciting new Active Floor!

The event will kick off with an energizing Red Light/Green Light game and conclude with smiles, cheers, and well-deserved awards during the final celebration. This event will not only celebrate the spirit of competition but also highlight the importance of curiosity, critical thinking, and hands-on learning in shaping the future of our young learners.

“We are thrilled to introduce this new tradition, where students can showcase their skills, innovation, and passion for learning,” said David K. Moore, Ed.D., Superintendent of Schools. “We look forward to seeing these talented students rise to the challenge”.
