WABASSO — A man in his late 30s suffered fatal injuries after officials said his Dodge Ram rolled off of U.S. 1 and struck a tree Monday morning. Indian River County Fire Rescue freed the man, who was trapped inside the mangled vehicle.
The man died on the way to the hospital, said Capt. Joe Abollo, a spokesperson for the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office. No one else was inside the vehicle, Abollo said.
The man’s name and town of residence were not immediately available.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to 911 calls reporting the single-vehicle crash about 6:13 a.m. in the 7900 block of U.S. 1, north of 79th Street in Wabasso. Deputies arrived on scene within four minutes, Abollo said.
A passerby and a property owner notified law enforcement about the wreck.
“It appears (the man) drove off the roadway and right into the tree,” Abollo said. Abollo said the tree was on private property.
Deputies closed one lane on southbound U.S. 1 at the crash site for several hours. The lane was reopened by Monday afternoon.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers were investigating the cause of the deadly crash.
No further information was immediately available.
