The John’s Island Foundation Awards $500,000 in Capital Funding to Construct Habitat’s New Citrus Crossing Development

(Vero Beach, FL) – The John’s Island Foundation Board of Directors awarded Indian River Habitat for Humanity a $500,000 John’s Island Foundation McCabe Leadership Grant to construct the upcoming Citrus Crossing subdivision. This grant will support infrastructure development which includes site work, utilities, stormwater retention, roads, sidewalks, recreation areas, landscape buffers, and right-of-way improvements.

This new subdivision will feature 32 single-family homes. Its location at the corner of 27th Avenue and 4th Street is ideal for much-needed affordable housing for working families. An elementary school, churches, playgrounds, and recreation spaces are all within walking distance for families with young children. The site includes green space and tree preservation and will feature 100% native plants and trees, in partnership with the Pelican Island Audubon Society. The total project investment will be more than $8 million.

John’s Island Foundation’s Leadership Grants fund capital projects that provide significant impact and lasting benefits within the Indian River community. Over the past few years, The John’s Island Foundation has been making strategic investments to address the lack of affordable housing and the rising cost of living for Indian River County’s most vulnerable populations. Over $1.3 million in leadership grants have been awarded to agencies working on issues related to housing. JIF is also a committed capital funder for other local nonprofit organizations, assisting with matters relating to food, shelter, disabilities, health, aging, abuse, and education.

Theresa Kilman, Leadership Grant VP of JIF, noted, “Habitat for Humanity is doing incredible work to increase access to affordable and stable housing. Home ownership isn’t just a roof over a family’s head, it is a source of safety, security and economic mobility for future generations. We are proud to be a part of this project, which will have a significant and enduring effect on our community.”
