GIFFORD — Deputies have a person in custody after a suspect motioning that he had a weapon stole a small amount of cash from a Wawa convenience store early Sunday. No injuries were reported in the incident, said Lt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson for the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of an armed robbery about 6:05 a.m. at the Wawa located in the 4400 block of U.S. 1, across the street from Cumberlands Farms gas station. Jaworski said the suspect motioned to the clerk that he had a firearm and demanded money from the register.

“It’s too early to say if he had a weapon or pretended to have a weapon,” Jaworski said.

The suspect took off with an undisclosed amount of cash and ran on foot from the store. Deputies responded to the call and detained a person of interest at a nearby residence, Jaworski said.

Jaworski said deputies, along with the Real Time Crime Center, were reviewing surveillance footage. The incident remains under investigation.

No further details were immediately available.
