Monday, December 30, 2024, INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. – Senior Resource Association (SRA) is delighted to announce the purchase of two temperature-controlled Meals on Wheels delivery trucks, generously funded by the John’s Island Foundation, Indian River Community Foundation and Friends of SRA. The new delivery trucks will significantly improve SRA’s ability to serve the senior community in Indian River County (IRC), allowing SRA to reach Meals on Wheels recipients in rural and hard-to-access areas while ensuring that hot and cold food is maintained at safe temperatures.
“We are incredibly grateful for their generous support. Each truck will help SRA reach more older friends and neighbors in need by feeding approximately 40 additional seniors each weekday, ensuring they receive hot, nutritious meals and improve their quality of life,” said SRA President and CEO Karen Deigl.
Approximately 56% of IRC’s seniors have low access to healthy food. Limited income or resources, lack of transportation, physical limitations, and health problems are some of the factors that contribute to food insecurity for seniors. Through the Meals on Wheels programs, SRA increases access to healthy food and nutrition for thousands of our community’s older population.
- Home-Delivered Meals: Dedicated volunteers deliver hot, nutritious meals to seniors’ doors five days a week. They also provide a daily wellness check and a sense of security. For many seniors, the volunteers’ visits are their only opportunity for socialization.
- Emergency Meals on Wheels: A temporary solution for homebound seniors discharged from a healthcare facility within the last 30 days or whose caregiver has been briefly admitted to a healthcare facility.
- Pet Meals on Wheels: Volunteers deliver pet food for Meals on Wheels clients’ pets, funding permitted, because pet companionship provides many health benefits to our senior community.
This year, SRA has provided more than 140,000 home-delivered meals to local seniors in need.
