INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A pilot was killed after a glider-style aircraft crashed in the grassy median along State Road 60 on Friday, sheriff’s officials said. The name of the pilot, who deputies described as a man, was withheld until next of kin is notified.
The single-plane incident occurred about 12:40 p.m. on Friday in the area of 98th Avenue and S.R. 60, just west of Interstate 95, Indian River County sheriff’s officials said. Deputies said the plane was a single-seat aircraft.
The plane was a Schleicher AS24 glider, according to a statement released by the Federal Aviation Administration. The National Transportation Safety Board was leading the investigation.
It was not immediately known which airport or field the plane took off from or its destination. New Hibiscus Airpark Airport, a glider and sailplane airfield, is located on 98th Avenue, just south of S.R. 60 near the crash site.
Representatives from New Hibiscus Airpark Airport were not immediately available for comment.
East and westbound lanes on S.R. 60 remain open, according to sheriff’s officials. The cause of the wreck was not yet available.
