Coming Up! Riverside weekend features laughs and music galore

Riverside Theatre is the place for standup comedy and free outdoor concerts this weekend. Al Ernst, a former Entertainer of the Year for Carnival Cruise Lines, teams up with fellow comedian Erik Lewin for a night of laughter starting at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, and Saturday, Nov. 9. All seats are $25. The Live in the Loop outdoor concerts run from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, and 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, and Saturday, Nov. 9. Thursday’s lineup features the 20th Street Jazz Band and a classic car show. Friday’s concert features MJ Wicker for a special performance titled “Live From Paradise.” This event features popular Trop-Rock covers from artists like Jimmy Buffett, along with Wicker’s original hits, including his chart-topping songs “Down in the Keys” and “Key Largo”; he will be accompanied by saxophonist Jim Briggs. Saturday’s concert features the local band Three O’clock Storm showing off their eclectic mix of musical styles, primarily focusing on country music but also drawing inspiration from blues, southern rock and R&B. Also at Riverside Theater, the comic farce “A Fox on the Fairway” runs through Nov. 10. It follows the madcap antics of the Quail Valley Country Club. Filled with mistaken identities and laugh-out-loud moments, the play explores themes of love, life and the obsession with golf. Single tickets start at $45. The Vero Beach Theatre Guild is offering some sophisticated acting classes this weekend. The classes are all taught by Michael Naffziger. The schedule is: Konstantin Stanislavski, 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Nov. 9; Uta Hagen, 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9; Michael Chekhov, noon to 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 10; and Sanford Meisner, 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10. The classes are designed for ages 16 years and older. They cost $25 for one, $40 for two, $60 for three and $75 for all four. Naffziger will also teach a basic directing class from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9. That is designed for ages 14 years and older. The cost for the directing class is $20. The Vero Beach Theatre Guild’s new “Blackbox After Dark” series begins this weekend with a musical entitled “(title of show).” The storyline follows two nobodies who write an original musical which unexpectedly becomes a hit. The show has adult language and is intended for mature audiences. It runs 90 minutes and has no intermission. Tickets start at $29.75. The 32nd Annual Samaritan Center Soup Bowl fundraiser for homeless families will be held Thursday, Nov. 7, throughout the Vero Beach area. From 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. you can pick up pottery bowls made by local artists at the Heritage Center, 2140 14th Ave., Vero Beach, as well as 20 other locations throughout the area. You can also purchase a variety of soups prepared by more than 25 participating locations across Indian River County. There is a suggested donation of $5 for the soup, $15 for a quart and $20 for one of the handmade bowls. The Indian River Bromeliad Society will hold its annual Bromeliad Auction starting 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, at Moose Lodge, 226 43rd Ave., Vero Beach. The event showcases some beautiful plants as well as giving instructions on growing them. There will also be refreshments. The nonprofit group gets these collector-quality plants from specialty nurseries around the state of Florida. “So many people could probably use some plants after the storms for their gardens and homes and we will have some unique, exotic easy to grow plants available at the auction at this fun event,” says Sally Gawler, Indian River Bromeliad Society president.
