INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Sheriff’s detectives continue to investigate the death of a woman whose body was found on the side of the roadway Wednesday afternoon. Sheriff’s officials said the death was suspicious, but could not immediately release details on the condition of the body.

“Our Criminal Investigations Division is currently investigating the incident to determine the cause of death,” Indian River County Sheriff’s officials said in a statement. “The female has been identified. We are not releasing her name at this time.”

A family was driving when they spotted the body near a tree line about 2:26 p.m. in the 6100 block of 65th Street, west of Winter Beach, said Sgt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office. The family then called 911.

Detectives went to the scene and combed the area for traces of evidence. Deputies blocked off 65th Street near 61st Court for up to seven hours, but allowed residents to go to their homes, Jaworski said.

The body was taken to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.
