United Way’s Community Leaders’ Breakfast Highlights Community Impact

VERO BEACH, October 7, 2024 – On Tuesday, October 2nd, United Way of Indian River County (UWIRC) hosted its highly anticipated annual Community Leaders’ Breakfast, welcoming nearly 200 community members. The event, held at the scenic Celebration Grove, brought together local leaders, business owners, nonprofit executives, and familiar faces for a morning filled with inspiration and a sense of shared purpose. Sponsored by Seacoast Bank, the event featured keynote speaker Rena Romano, an acclaimed author, mindset coach, and speaker.

The Community Leaders’ Breakfast has become a cherished tradition, marking the start of the season and energizing attendees for the months ahead. Board Chair Dr. Katie Nall kicked off the event with a warm welcome, followed by an invocation from Biz Gainey of Pillar Community Church. Following a video showcasing United Way’s impactful work, CEO Meredith Egan took the stage and shared powerful insights into the core of United Way’s mission.

“We come together today because we believe in the power of unity,” Egan said. “Through collaboration with nonprofit partners, advocacy with government officials, and support from workplaces and donors, United Way breaks down barriers and creates pathways to a better future. United we rise.”

Rena Romano delivered a moving keynote address, sharing her personal story of overcoming challenges and the importance of resilience. Rena’s comments were powerful and contributed so much to the knowledge and awareness surrounding sexual assault, mental health, and well-being. She connected her survivor story to the often unsee impact a United Way funded program can have on someone’s life.   Her message of hope and empowerment resonated deeply with the audience.

The morning also featured the presentation of the annual Richardson Spirit of Indian River County Awards, celebrating individuals and organizations that have made a significant impact on the community. Jeffrey Petersen, Senior Vice President of Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, presented the awards, starting with Schlitt Services. For 35 years, Schlitt Services has demonstrated exceptional commitment to the community, raising over $156,800 through workplace campaigns, sponsorships, and their innovative Referral Program.

Indian River Healthy Start Coalition received the second Workplace Campaign award for their 22-year partnership with United Way. This year, they embraced the creative “Dare the CEO” fundraiser, raising critical funds while continuing to serve as a vital support system for every new mom and baby in Indian River County.

The Funded Partner Award presented by Caryn Toole, Indian River and Okeechobee County Director, Communities Connected for Kids, was given to United Against Poverty (UP), recognized for their innovative collaborations, including the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, the Access to Justice initiative, and their STEP program. UP continues to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to adapting their services to meet the evolving needs of the community.

A Special Recognition Richardson Spirit Award was presented to Jeff Pickering, President and CEO of the Indian River Community Foundation, for his role as a changemaker and dedicated problem-solver. Pickering’s partnership with United Way has been instrumental in addressing some of the county’s most pressing issues.

The event concluded with the presentation of the Ralph T. King Award to Michael Kint, honoring his extraordinary contributions to the community over 25 years. Kint, a former CEO of United Way and a Hospital District Trustee, was celebrated for his visionary leadership and lasting impact on mental health and early childhood development initiatives. “Michael’s tireless dedication and ability to bring people together is what makes him such a deserving recipient of this award,” Egan said.

Closing the event, Egan left the audience with an inspiring call to action: “When we unite as a community, we create a ripple effect of positive change. Together, we are lighting the way toward a brighter future for everyone.”

United Way of Indian River County thanks all who attended and participated in the event and invites the community to join them in continuing to build a stronger, more connected Indian River County.
