Enjoy ‘Rachmaninoff 3’ on September 29 in Vero Beach

Symphony Program is ‘Rachmaninoff 3’

Concert includes expressive Russian symphony and two world premieres

(VERO BEACH, FL) September 16, 2024 – The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra continues its Season 16 offerings with Rachmaninoff 3, Sunday, September 29 at 3:00 PM, at the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center, 1707 16th Street in Vero Beach. The spare style of Rachmaninoff’s third symphony baffled listeners at its 1936 premiere, but may be his most “expressively Russian” symphony– particularly in the dance rhythms of the finale. The 40-minute Symphony No. 3 packs an emotional punch, with soaring melodies, shattering climaxes and life-affirming exclamations. Embraced enthusiastically since the 1970s, the work is frequently played and recorded. In addition to Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 3, the program will contain two world premieres. SCSO favorites, sopranos Mary Kruger and Amy Cofield return to the stage to present Mark Piszczek’s “Brigit and The Banshee,” a new work based on Celtic folklore and the mythology of pre-Christian Ireland. With text from Orlando’s poet laureate, Susan Lilley, the evocative tone poem centers on the legend of the goddess-cum-saint Brigit. The second premiere will feature young composer Lucas Cornejo, an 18-year-old senior from Melbourne High School and a student of conductor Aaron Collins. Under the guidance of Collins, Cornejo won a spot at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute program for music composition during the summer of 2022. The audience to Rachmaninoff 3 will be the first to hear his symphony of sweeping and rousing themes. $35 tickets for the concert are available through the orchestra website at www.SpaceCoastSymphony.org or at Marine Bank & Trust, beachside and mainland branches. Tickets at the door are $40. Concertgoers aged 18 and under or with a college ID are admitted free to every SCSO concert. Space Coast Symphony Orchestra Conductor and Artistic Director, Aaron T. Collins is committed to showcasing new works and is pleased to present two such pieces on the program featuring Rachmaninoff 3.

“The Rachmaninoff work we’ll be performing is widely appreciated today, even though the audience didn’t know what to make of it in 1936,” said Collins. “Every piece we know and love had its premiere at some point in history, and we’re proud to shine a light on the new works of today — alongside the classics we already treasure.”

The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra is one of only a handful of U.S. orchestras to perform year-round. Concertgoers aged 18 and under or with a college ID are admitted free to every SCSO concert.
